What is it like to catch the first view of the sun after
30 days of Arctic winter darkness? You’ll have to see it to believe it.

Daylight is just one of the many features of this Arctic festival 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. The Inuvik Sunrise Festival has been bringing the people of Inuvik and the Mackenzie Delta together to celebrate the return of the sun since 1988.
It’s a time to shake off the darkness and welcome the light and what a better way to do that than to throw a party. There is plenty to do on this first weekend of the sun in Inuvik. Take in the show by the iconic Inuvialuit Drum Dancers, join in the jigging contest or get your picture taken with a reindeer or inside a real igloo. Join the locals as they welcome back the sun during the day, but on Saturday night join the community in watching the fireworks display and warm up by the giant bonfire put on by the local fire department. Dress warm as the days can be extremely cold, but you will be warmed by the welcome and friendliness of the people of Inuvik. |
